As one of the original counties of California, it’s no surprise that Marin is full of wonderful things to see and do. Here are four facts you didn’t know about Marin County.
History
The origins of Marin County date back to February 1850, when it became one of the original 27 counties of California. The county was given the name “Marin” in honor of the chief of the Licatiut tribe. The county gained popularity during the Gold Rush that occurred in the mid-1800s. People from around the country and the world flocked to California in hopes of striking gold and becoming wealthy. Between the years 1863 to 1865, Mount Tamalpais drew attention as people searched the mountain for precious gold. It was during this time that hiking trails and wagon paths emerged on the mountain.
Marin Headlands
The Marin Headlands, located in Golden Gate National Park, is famous for its stunning views of the Bay Area and numerous historic military settlement fortifications. Adventure seekers have the opportunity to participate in a half-mile hike into the Headlands for a tour of Point Bonita Lighthouse. Built in 1855, this lighthouse helped ships navigate the dangerous, and often deadly, waters. During this tour—which is entirely free—you will hear about the fascinating history of the lighthouse and even get the chance to cross a suspension bridge.
World Class Cheese
Marin County has a few widely-acclaimed cheesemakers and Cowgirl Creamery, located in Point Reyes Station, is among the best of the best. Founded by two friends, this cheese shop has been crafting its word-class cheese for almost three decades. They are passionate about creating artisan and organic cheese and sell their top-tier products in over 500 stores, farmers’ markets, independent cheese shops, and nationwide in Whole Foods Markets. They even have a cheese named Mt. Tam in honor of the legendary mountain located in Marin.
Skywalker Ranch
Marin County is also home to the movie ranch and workplace of George Lucas—the creator, director, and producer of the Star Wars universe. Known as Skywalker Ranch, this stunning ranch was constructed in the early 1980s. In the spirit of independence, George Lucas intentionally broke the status quo of movies being filmed and produced in Hollywood.
